Dígame en español is revolutionizing the way home-schoolers gain their Spanish foreign language credits. With the introduction of web conferencing into the program, learning is enhanced as never before when students practice with a Spanish-speaking moderator and other students in a classroom setting.

Textbooks, workbooks, online games and Teacher Presentation DVDs promote learning at any time, any place and any pace. A one–on-one teaching format is constantly being reinforced with many hands–on learning experiences.  Before very long you are speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish!

Dígame en español is the vision of Peggy Mayhall-Brown. After 34 years as a Spanish teacher and guidance counselor, she recognized the void that home-school students and their parents face in obtaining their required Carnegie Units in foreign language for high school graduation. She holds a BA from the University of South Alabama and a MS in Psychology from the University of Central Arkansas.

Review by Linda K. Foster

Whether you’re a businessperson, student, or traveler, brushing up on a language or interested in learning a new one, Power-Glide, available through BrainGrow, is a fast, fun and effective source for learning a second language.

A plethora of research exists supporting the personal, cognitive, academic and societal benefits of learning a second language. An obvious personal benefit is having an expanded access to people and resources. Students speaking more than one language are able to communicate with more people, read more literature and function more fully while traveling. Second languages afford alternative ways of expression and help foster an appreciation for the customs and achievements of other cultures.

In 1961, Dr. Gerhard Haukebo, a professor at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., created a two-week German camp for children ages 7-12. The counselors were college language education majors willing to try a new total immersion language program. Haukebo imagined an entire immersion model that eventually came to include Village passports, "customs", native speakers, authentic architecture, cultural cuisine and realia.

In 2005, Concordia Language Villages, a non-profit organization, celebrated its 45th anniversary by offering 13 languages to nearly 9500 youths between the ages of seven and 18. Villagers come from all 50 states as well as several other countries for one-, two- or four-week sessions at sites located in Minnesota and Georgia. In addition, there are adult and family programs in language and cultural immersion and Village Weekends for teachers and their students (or Homeschoolers and their parents!) during the academic year

With so many inferior language systems on the market, on those “blue moon” moments when a great system hits the market, it should be snapped up immediately! Such is the case with Greek ‘n’ Stuff’s Hey Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek!” The program’s main idea is to assist your family in acquiring an understanding of ancient biblical Greek (known as Koine). This is done using a system of reading and writing activities, as well as vocabulary and grammar work.
