MATH DRAWINGS - Good Stuff For Teachers
By Mary Smale

Math Drawings by Mary Smale is an exciting multi-disciplinary method of incorporating art with math allowing students to create entire pictures using only basic geometric shapes. For over 30 years, Mary Smale taught algebra and other math disciplines in high school and middle school. During this time, she developed her unique math-based art lesson, originally used as a reward system for her 8th grade students.

Mary soon found that she was able to disguise new and old math vocabulary as instructions for drawing and, for the first time in her teaching career, she had 100% participation in her math lessons. Her students were able to combine their love for drawing with basic geometric principles to create "works of art". Mary later taught math and art on television for 2Ĺ on the Los Angeles based KLCS-TV program "Homework Hotline Teacher" and was ultimately convinced to write Math Drawings so her principles could be used by teachers in their art, history and special education classes.

Social Skills - Far Beyond Mere "Socialization"
By Emerson Sandow

As hard as it is for we old-timer homeschoolers to believe, one of the first three questions non-homeschoolers still inquire about is "Socialization".

Not only do homeschooled children often exhibit the type of positive social behavior this question is seeking to have answered, but as homeschoolers, we have the opportunity to provide our children with "teaching" that is far beyond what can be gained in institutional school settings. This is a socialization far beyond what the question seeks to have answered. . . it is hyper-socialization, if you will, and is an immeasurable skill to possess. This is also known as personal comportment.

A recent study by Stanford, Carnegie Research and Harvard, demonstrated that 85% of a personís success is due to his/her social skills and only 15% can be attributed to technical skill or knowledge.

Significant Scribbles
By Nan Barchowsky

Scribbling is a key factor in pre-writing. Watch! Watch a child's completely independent marks for clues as to how the hand moves to create images. Independent means that the child voluntarily picks up anything that will make a mark. Paper may be handy, or a stick may be the tool of choice for scratching in some sand. Be patient as you observe and find clues to handwriting. Make no verbal remarks about the images. You might suggest starting the image over on the left, or at the top, especially if the child says he or she is "writing." Remember the child may be imitating you when you have pen in hand, apparently doing something important. Resist the temptation to say, Oh, that looks like an "a," a "B" or….

The Lighter Side of Preparedness: Disaster Preparedness
By Glenda Lehman Ervin, Lehmanís Hardware, http://www.lehmans.com/

Iím bored.
Thereís nothing to do here.
How much longer do we have to wait?

No, these are not the comments from the back seat as you travel down I-77 on your summer vacation. But they could be the comments of your children, stuck in your home with no power or play dates for several days.

In this article weíre going to explore the lighter side of the Temporary Off Grid Existence. (As an aside, here in Amish country we often use the term off-the-grid to refer to our neighbors who are not "attached" to the electrical grid that gives many us power. They are self-sufficient because they donít rely on traditional forms of electric power. Hence the Off-Grid reference.)

Continental Academy - Online High School Diploma Program

Every homeschooling situation is different and the needs of each child can vary drastically. Most parents have chosen to homeschool their children, while others have been forced to find alternative education for students who do not have a positive "fit" in the public education system. Unfortunately, many of these children encounter disciplinary problems due to this inability to conform and are sent on a swift downward spiral. These parents are frustrated, overwhelmed, and are left with nowhere to turn for the education their children need. In a U.S. Department of Education study released last year, adults with a high school diploma earned an average of $9,000 a year more than their peers who did not earn a diploma. Compound those earnings over a lifetime and it is very easy to imagine the years of struggle and hardship for those non-traditional children.
