Discovering Intelligent Design – A Journey Into the Scientific Evidence

“. . . when most people say “scientist” they mean “technician.” A technician is a highly-trained person whose job is to apply known techniques and principles. He deals with the known. A scientist is a person who seeks to know the true nature of physical reality. He deals with the unknown. In short, scientists discover and technicians apply. . . it is no long evident whether scientists really discover new things or whether they create them.” (Italics in original) -- Gary Zukav, The Dancing Wu Li Masters, p. 9 (Bantam Paperbacks, August, 1980)

I begin this review of an excellent text about Intelligent Design with Gary Zukav’s quote, because I believe much of the fuel behind the arguments for Unaided Evolution (Darwinism, et al.) come from technicians, disguised as scientists. True seekers of the Truth in the scientific realm will doubtless recognize that the evidence is not overwhelmingly for or against either point of view. Such Truth Seekers would support the teaching of both bodies of fact and conjecture side-by-side in order to present the broad, objective spectrum of information to students, who then can make up their own minds, or keep seeking the Truth! Alas, this is not the case and Intelligent Design is barred from being taught in public schools. [Yet another reason to homeschool.]

Homeschoolers Are Like Small Towns

Go to any small town in America and you may see a proliferation of locally-owned businesses. "Mom and pop" restaurants, drycleaners, gas stations, stationers . . . corporate America hasn't completely wreaked its damage on Main Street, yet. Sole proprietor businesses are just like the people who own them -- they have a unique, individual quality that often reflects the owner's personality. In a sole-prop restaurant, when you sit down at a table for a meal, the person waiting on you might the boss -- or is doing the cooking. In some rural areas of the country, such businesses may seem quirky or eccentric, but to many of us, that is the very quality that makes such a business endearing and worthy of patronage.

On the other hand, corporate entities tend to have a slick, fabricated, designed look and feel. Plus, the "owners" are usually very far removed from you. Some corporations pride themselves on having a consistent floor plan and décor in every single location. This often lowers costs, and seems helpful to one who travels a great deal. Think of any national video store, wholesale department store, or restaurant chain, and you know how it is: You could be dropped blindfolded in the middle of any American city, walk into a local chain location and go right to the appropriate area of the store where a particular video, clothing item or menu selection can be found. I think this is boring and I believe that such sameness is not laudable in most instances. (If I go to New England, I want to see "New England" -- not the Madison Avenue version of New England.) Television has, of course, helped to spawn this homogenization, this de-geography-ing of American life. Everyone who watches the tube often, finds himself becoming hypnotized by this across-the-board identity. No one can argue that some industries or endeavors cry out for standardization. Railroad gauges have to be standardized. Pure food practices should be standardized nationally, so that a traveler from one state to another does not feel he/she is entering a third-world country. But beyond such matters where flat-lining serves an intelligent purpose, sameness is not beautiful, inspiring or desirable to real people.

Learning and Teaching Finances

After reading Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad" series of books, I wanted to share his ideas with our group of homeschooling teens. Mr. Kiyosaki claims that rich parents teach their children different lessons and attitudes about money than do the poor and middle class, and I wanted our kids to learn as the rich kids do. By the end of class, however, the thinking of teens and parents alike had changed.

I used the Blue Stocking Press edition of Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?, an Uncle Eric Book, and Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad book and Cash Flow games, starting with his Cash Flow for Kids. Even though the game was recommended for ages 12 and under, I figured we'd be safe playing the kids' version first, to ease the learning of basic concepts and vocabulary. The game relies on icons to help visualize how a balance sheet balances, while keeping calculations down to a minimum. The teens mastered this game at the first playing, and they actually asked for the older version, Cash Flow 101, anxious to learn the more sophisticated concepts.

We met weekly at a local library. I started the first class by borrowing an idea from Rosamund Stone's and Benjamin Zander's book The Art of Possibility. I told the teens they would each get an A for the class by completing just one assignment: They had to write a few sentences, pretending the class was over, telling me either what they had learned to deserve that A or imagining how they had applied their learning to become rich adults. The authors' idea is that this helps students visualize their success, helping to make it reality. The teens' sentences ran the gamut from serious plans to become rich to tales of sailing on yachts. Some of the teens chose to pick stocks in which to invest imaginary money and report back each week as to how they did.
