How can we help you Homeschool better?

Dear Homeschoolers,

When our son was little, what punctuated our homeschooling, let's say before he turned 8 or 9, were the things that actually punctuated my life as I was growing up. For example, Cool Fall weather brought the desire for new school clothes and the wish to cruise the aisles in the grocery stores that had all the school supplies. Winter brought the feeling that we were going to get a "break" from the "work" of school. Spring brought the desire to stare out the window endlessly at the butterflies with dreams of summer. It is wonderful to be so free of the seasonal and time restrictions we parents experienced as children! Imagine what your life would have been if you could have done your school work in such a flexible fashion! It is uplifting to know what a great home life we provide for our children and that our sacrifices are meaningful. We strive to make our publications be a positive addition to your homeschooling experiences. Thank you for reading. -Mary Leppert

E-media

E-media Guitar Instruction Software

This guitar instruction program is excellent for any guitar student at any level. Even a seasoned, calloused pro can learn a few things from it. The developer of the E-media program has thought of everything that matters in learning this fabulous instrument Beethoven called a miniature orchestra. The user can see what s/he is doing in both tablature format (used by guitarists who don't read standard notation) and on the traditional staff, as well as hearing the notes as they are played. This produces a complete knowledge of the relationship between written music, its sound and its production on the guitar. The E-media program also offers a built-in metronome, an animated fret board and split-screen video lessons, removing all guesswork from the entire process of guitaring, from re-stringing to playing like the pros! Visit their website and see for yourself how great (and affordable) a music instrument instructional software can be!

The Richest Man in the World Has Some Advice for Us about College . . .

(P.S.) He didn't take it himself)

by John Taylor Gatto

1. William Faulkner- On April 12, 2005, the August "New York Review of Books" pronounced William Faulkner "the most influential innovator in the annals of American fiction," a man well-deserving of his Nobel Prize. Faulkner, a high school dropout, was later able to enter the University of Mississippi on a special waiver for ex-WWI servicemen. After a single year there he dropped out with a 'D' in English. Between that time and his Nobel Prize he never returned to college.

Cafi's Commentary: Hitting The Wall
by Cafi Cohen

Marathon runners talk about "hitting the wall." It happens about 20 miles into the 26-mile race. Despite months or years of intense training, some runners find their energy and resources depleted just a few miles short of their goal. They cannot feel their legs. Vision blurs. Desire is there, but their bodies will carry them no further. They drop out. Other racers learn to run through the wall. They ignore what seems like an impossible situation and find a way to cross the finish line.

Like marathoners, most parents who homeschool children through high school also hit the wall. Their son needs to learn algebra, or their daughter wants to study French. It happened to us when our son Jeff reached age thirteen and announced that he wanted to learn to pilot an airplane. Both my husband and I avoid flying whenever possible so the thought of helping Jeff earn his wings appealed to neither of us. Because we lacked interest and knowledge, we hit the wall.

Macaroni Kid
Make Money Publishing Your Local Events Online

A Brilliant Money Maker for Moms Nationwide

When Joyce Shulman and Nicki Hemby concocted the idea for a community- based e-newsletter of kids events and family activities in their hometown, they never imagined they'd be empowering moms all over the country, but that's exactly what happened when they founded Macaroni Kid.

In the Summer of 2008, Joyce and Nicki started emailing and posting a weekly listing of events in Southampton New York where they live. Local newspapers listed only a fraction of the things going on, and they knew there had to be a better way. With virtually no Internet experience, they found a way to inform other moms and the word started to spread. From mom to mom word of mouth they found new subscribers and realized they were truly filling a need that they themselves had felt. And as their readership grew, advertisers came on board and Joyce and Nicki were thrilled to earn some extra money and trade for things they used to buy for their kids.
