The Gospel Workshop: Quality, Affordability, & Convenience for Guitar Students

If your child is interested in guitar lessons, but you are wary about the potentially steep price of private instruction, The Gospel Workshop may be the solution.

The Gospel Workshop is a fully online series of guitar lessons for beginners and intermediate students. The lessons are presented in the form of high-definition videos that learners can watch as many times as necessary, whenever they want.

The site was founded by Brent Rochester, a minister from South Carolina who, along with his family, uses bluegrass Gospel music in his ministry. His son, Isaac Rochester, presents the guitar lessons. Isaac is soft-spoken and relaxed in front of the camera, which encourages students to also relax and focus. The beginner-level lessons start out with the very basics, like how to hold the guitar, choosing basic equipment and how to tune the guitar. They quickly progress to such topics as playing basic chords and picking out simple songs. In the course of a video lesson, Isaac offers helpful tips and goes over common mistakes a student may be making. Most of the beginner lessons are just a few minutes long, which makes them easy to digest. Many videos include a link to supplemental material, such as tab charts or other videos. The beginner level series is made of three parts: The video lessons; a song library, in which Isaac presents a simple Gospel song or hymn in both a slowed-down and an actual-speed version; and videos of helpful tips.

A one-month subscription is $24.95. Six months, is $124.95, and a full year costs $199.95. Considering that many private instructors charge $25 per half-hour, that is quite a savings. With a subscription, each video is permanently available to watch as many times as necessary, to let the lesson really sink in. And, of course, there is no time or cost associated with traveling to and from lessons -- the lessons come to you! Supplemental, one-on-one Skype sessions are available for an additional fee.

Though all the songs taught are bluegrass-style Gospel songs, the skills taught are universal. Once a student has the basics down, the skills acquired from The Gospel Workshop could easily be applied to other styles of acoustic guitar music.

For any homeschooler interested in learning the guitar, The Gospel Workshop provides quality, affordable instruction as well as unbeatable convenience. Take a tour of the website at
