There are three ways to ?homeschool? here: Parents at home, private professional tutor or establish a homeschool as an extension of a church school. For parents to be qualified to teach, they must have a high school diploma or the equivalent. We are offering the parent-taught option here. (If you are moving to PA, please see the "Cautionary Words" on the PHEA website.)
Reporting: The parents must keep a portfolio of the materials used to teach, the work accomplished and the results from standardized tests administered in Gr. 3, 5 and 8. A written assessment must be completed by June 30 of each year as well.
Compulsory Attendance: From ages 8 to 17, (Elem: 900 to High school: 990 hours per year).
Required Subjects: Gr. 1-8: Arithmetic, reading, English spelling, writing, U.S. and Penn. history, health and physiology, civics, phys. Education, art, music, geography, fire safety, general safety and science. Gr. 9-12, add English, literature, speech and writing (composition), world history, algebra and geometry.
Testing: As noted above, standardized tests must be administered in Gr. 3, 5 and 8.
