The Rise of Homeschooling

The landscape of education has dramatically changed over the past decade, and particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, where many families turned to homeschooling as a viable alternative to traditional schooling. The increasing number of families opting for homeschooling has sparked a demand for resources, support, and community connections to ensure students receive a well-rounded education. Recognizing this trend, Ashland University made a strategic decision to establish the Homeschool Classical Learning Center, creating a supportive environment for local families engaged in homeschooling.

Mission and Philosophy

The Homeschool Classical Learning Center is grounded in the principles of classical education, which emphasizes the importance of knowledge acquisition, critical thinking, and character development. At Ashland Center, the mission of the Center is to nurture not only the intellect but also the moral and ethical formation of students. The Center encourages a love of learning through engaging classes and activities, free of charge.

Key elements of classical education implemented at the center include:

Trivium Structure – The Trivium (‘three roads” in Latin) is a framework utilized in classical education divided into three stages: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. This structure allows students to build a strong foundation in knowledge, develop reasoning skills, and acquire the ability to articulate and communicate effectively.

Holistic Learning – The curriculum at the Center is designed to ensure that students engage with subjects comprehensively and via multiple learning styles. This is achieved through interdisciplinary studies that cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of each academic area and how a student learns best.

Character Development – Recognizing that education extends beyond academics, the Center aims to foster virtuous character traits in its students. It engages learners in discussions about ethics, morality, and community service, preparing them for responsible citizenship.

Offerings and Curriculum

The Homeschool Classical Learning Center caters to a wide array of learning needs and interests, making it an attractive option for families seeking diverse educational opportunities. Its programming includes:

Tutoring and Workshops

The Center offers personalized tutoring sessions for students of all grades, ensuring that each child receives targeted support in their areas of study. Workshops are also available throughout the academic year, focusing on specific subjects like mathematics, literature, history, and sciences, enabling students to deepen their knowledge and skills in these areas.

Curriculum Resources

One of the Center’s significant advantages is its extensive curriculum library. Families have access to high-quality educational resources, including texts from classical literature, historical documents, and math and science workbooks. Ashland University partners with esteemed curriculum providers, ensuring that students receive an education that is both rigorous and enriching.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

Understanding the importance of hands-on experiences, the Center organizes various extracurricular activities. These activities not only enrich the academic experience but also facilitate socialization amongst students, making learning more interactive and enjoyable.

Arts and Culture Programs

Understanding the importance of creativity in education, the Center includes arts and culture programs as an integral part of its offerings. Classes in visual arts, music, theater, and literature not only foster creativity but also allow students to express themselves and showcase their talents. We offer in-person professor-led workshops, gym, Classical Acting and art classes.

 Dual Enrollment Programs

For high school students, the Center offers dual enrollment opportunities through Ashland University’s College Credit Plus (CCP) program. This allows students to earn college credits while completing high school requirements, effectively preparing them for higher education and providing a competitive edge in their academic planning.

Community and Support

One of the essential aspects of the Homeschool Classical Learning Center is its commitment to building a strong sense of community among families. The Center serves as a hub where north-central Ohio homeschooling families can connect, share experiences, and collaborate on educational pursuits.

Parental Involvement

As all homeschoolers know, parents play a crucial role in teaching their own children and in the Center, actively engaging in various workshops and programs designed to equip them with the tools necessary to support their children’s education. The Center provides ongoing resources and guidance for parents, including workshops on homeschooling strategies, curriculum selection, and assessments.

Networking Opportunities

The Center fosters connections amongst local families, creating invaluable opportunities for social interaction, mentorship, and collaboration. Regular family events, group classes, and community gatherings encourage parents and children alike to build lasting relationships within the homeschooling community of Ashland and surroundings.

Guidance for New Homeschoolers

Recognizing that the transition to homeschooling can be overwhelming for some families, the Homeschool Classical Learning Center offers guidance and resources for newcomers. This includes assistance in navigating state regulations, curriculum choices, and best practices in homeschooling. Moreover, they provide advice on establishing a conducive learning environment and maintaining balance in family life.

Educational Conferences

The Center regularly organizes conferences featuring renowned speakers in the field of education. This year, 2025, the 2nd annual conference will be on March 8, with Todd Wilson. The 3rd conference will be on November 1, with Heidi St. John. These events provide parents and educators with insights into different aspects of homeschooling, including curriculum development, educational philosophy, and parenting strategies.
