South Dakota Homeschool Laws
Overview
- Attend school up to age 18
- Parents/guardians who choose to provide alternative instruction are required to file an Alternative Instruction Notification. The notification must be submitted on a form provided by the Department of Education.
- Parent/Guardian/Alternative Instructor is not required to be state certified.
- Parent to file exemption annually.
- Instruction must be given with the aim of mastery of the English language.
- Testing required in grades 2, 4, 8, and 11
- Instruction must be given with the aim of mastery of the English language.
- Parent/Guardian/Alternative Instructor may not instruct more than 22 students.
An updated notification indicating a change in status for a child must be submitted within 30 days of any of the following:
- The child is moving to or open enrolling in another district but will still be home schooling.
- The child has decided to participate in dual credit, and it was not previously indicated.
- The child will no longer be home schooling.
- Access the DOE Alternative Instruction Notification system regularly to review notifications relevant to their district
- District to loan textbooks without charge to all person’s ages five to nineteen
- For individuals who choose, a paper copy of the notification may be downloaded and submitted per the instructions on the form.
