Overview:
The law governing homeschooling is: Tennessee Code Annotated § 49-6-3050
It states that there are 3 requirements for parents who wish to independently home educate:
First, give notice to their local Director of Schools prior to each school year, of their intent to homeschool. This notice must include the qualifications of the teaching parent(s) (high school diploma or GED), the names, ages, number of children and grade level of each child, the location of the home school, proposed curriculum and proposed hours of teaching. (Required: 4 hours per day, 180 days per year.)
Secondly, they must keep attendance records and submit them to the Director of Schools at the end of each school year and
Thirdly, they must submit proof of vaccination and receipt of any health services or examinations, as the law requires. That is Homeschooling in Tennessee.
- Contact the Homeschool Coordinator in your school district to provide Intent letter and proof of
qualifications
· Mandatory testing in Grades 5, 7 & 9, same a public school students
· Attendance: 4 hours per day, 180 days per year, records given to local Director of SchoolsOther options than independent homeschooling: Belonging to a church-related Umbrella School or using an accredited Online Curriculum.Statewide Organization
