New Mexico Homeschooling Laws

Overview

  • Students between the ages of 5 through 18
  • Basic academic educational program, including reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science.
·       Notify the state each year.
·       Parent/Guardian keep track of attendance (180 days), must have a diploma or GED, and keep immunization records.
·       The NMPED Home School System is the online home school notification database for the State of New Mexico.  Parent accounts allow families to easily notify the NMPED of the enrollment and disenrollment of children in home schooling each year.
·       Once an account is created, parents can login to provide annual notification to NMPED, update contact details, change geographic school district (if moved), and provide enrollment/disenrollment information.
·        In addition, parents will be able to print an official verification of enrollment notification, with the State of NM seal, at any time.  This online registration replaces the Letter of Intent to the Public Education Department Secretary.
·       Re-notify the state on or before August 1st of each year thereafter.  Notification must also be made to the NMPED when a student moves or enters a public or private school from home school.  This can be done via the NMPED Home School System by logging into the account created by either a parent or legal guardian.
·       Registration for the 2021-2022 school year will open on or after June 15, 2021.  The home school database system is set for 2020-2021 until then.
·       For home school families who elect not to use a computer or mobile device to provide notification of home schooling via the online database, you may print, sign, and mail in a Hard Copy.  The data will then be entered into the database by the NMPED staff.  Parents are advised to mail the form via Certified Return Receipt or other delivery verification for their records.
